FLINTSTONE MASONRY Stone Heritage
STONE MASON'S HERITAGE GOES BACK TO SCOTLAND.
IN 1898 William D. Dick (master stone mason) migrated from Truin, Scotland to Niagara Falls, Ont. Canada. He was hired by the Canadian goverment to supervisor all the stonework for the Queen Victoria parks and Niagara gorge area surronding the falls. The long stone wall that runs the on top of gorge was one his firsts projects, along with the stone planters and many buildings.
As his son got older he began teaching him the age of art of stone cutting and setting. So the trade began to be passed from father to son. The secrects of the age old art was a hertigage to be proud of.
1945 the son, now a master stone craftman was asked by a church in Niagara fall, New York to move there and build them a new stone church. Immigration status was hard to achieve at that time. Because of his talents the church was able to help him mirgrate to Niagra Falls, New York.
William D Dick JR. Had Three sons, Willliam-Kennth-Clyde. when they reached the apprentisceship age ... teaching began anew. The art of stone masonry was passed along to them. Mr Dick then formed Wm D Dick and Son's construction.
In the years that followed Wm D Dick and sons did most of the stone projects that were completed in the Western New York area. Buffalo, Niagara Falls, of the Dick Stonemasons.
Goat Island bridge, War and Bronze memorial, the Niagra Parkway, Collegiate college..just to name a few projects. Wm C Dick also help with the restoration of the Buffalo armory. He also help build the Sam Rayburn Senate office building and was present when President John f. Kennedy came to lay the cornerstone.
The Recession hit New York state hard and the funding for major project were cancelled. The oldest son, William C. Dick and his wife and six children moved to Utah. It is there today, that he continues to practice his art in building many stone projects in the area. He also does many brick homes.
Mr Dick still uses the hand cutting tools, cuts his own stone and rock faces. cuts arches, radius, rock faces, does end jointing with all types of natural stone. an He uses all of the skills that has been handed from his great grand father-Scottish Mastercraftsman Stone mason, Wm D. Dick of Truin, Scotland.
